Finding YOUR Purpose

You discover what your natural talents are by living your life FULLY and giving it everything you’ve got. Not by stepping back and living in your shadow. The world needs what you have! How do you most want to feel? What resonates with you as soon as you hear it? Some examples might include:

What do you love doing the most?

Think back to a time(s) when you felt really good! A time when you did what you set out to do.

  1. What were you doing?
  2. What talent or gifts did you engage in the process?
  3. How do you like to spend your free time?
  4. What is your dream job?
  5. When do you feel the most fulfilled?
  6. Are you involved in your community?
  7. What are your most joyful relationships? Why?
  8. When do you lose track of time because you are having so much fun?
  9. What are you the most proud of?
  10. What are you REALLY, REALLY generous with? You love giving it away?

What do you KNOW you do well; you’re a NATURAL at this? 

(write, talk, coach, teach, build, guide, inspire, motivate, listen, manage, perform, sing, develop, make, design)

Now write out two or three sentences that describes YOU.

  1. What product or service do you provide?
  2. What talent(s) or gift(s) do you use in order to do this?
  3. Who benefits?
  4. What is achieved from this product or service?

How does it feel? Is it true? Does it describe you?

This may or may not have to do with your 9-5 job. Do you LOVE your job, what you do and why you’re there? Do you love your coworkers? Do you get to be really creative and free with your ideas? Then your job may be a perfect reflection of your purpose.

Or…do you dread going to work everyday? You don’t like the people you work with and your job sucks the life out of you? Do you hate having to get out of bed every morning to go there? Then you are most likely NOT living your purpose.

How can you give, love and live to your fullest potential (your purpose) when you are in misery 40+ hours a week? You can’t. Your obligation is NOT your PURPOSE. Pay bills- YES. And then find something that brings you closer to what you want the most; what gives you juice and lights your fire? Go there!

Are you staying in your miserable life-sucking job because you have WEEKS and WEEKS of vacation time earned that you don’t want to lose? Well think about this: our joy is directly related to our health. If you are in a stressed out environment, miserable and angry most of the time, chances are you won’t be able to enjoy those “vacation” days for long, anyway. You’ll be busy spending your time nursing yourself back to health, or worse…

You don’t have to take “drastic” action right NOW, but you can start making small changes that will help you see more clearly. Clarity comes from doing.

Take action: What can you do right now to change your circumstances? Only YOU know the answer. Don’t get stuck; safe is not necessarily better. Please don’t WAIT to be happy. Start doing something today that makes you happy NOW; something that brings you JOY. Look at your schedule and see how you can rearrange your priorities to put activities into place that will make you feel the way you want to feel. Give it some thought and then DO IT!

IMG_0143My day begins everyday pretty much the same way; I get up, give thanks & gratitude, write in my journal for 10 minutes, drink my coffee, and read my 10+ pages. Then I look at my calendar and my to-do-list to see how the rest of my day is going to unfold.

As I was going through this pretty regular routine recently, I realized that I had not been scheduling time in my day to allow for moving my body. Knowing (because I have been taught by some of the best teachers and coaches out there) that “your priorities show up in two places…your checkbook and your calendar”, it would have to be scheduled. And no, I’m not talking about moving from the bed to my office; I’m talking about actually moving my body…like a bike ride or hula hoops, or something of that nature…a walk, yoga, etc. Just saying it or writing it on my to-do-list was NOT working.

Not scheduling the time to exercise the day before had made me feel like crapola!  (And just so ya know…crapola in NOT one of my core desired feelings (or CDF’s)). So the decision I had to make was WHERE to carve out that time in my day. It’s not like I don’t have any extra time; we all do-it’s only a matter of what we’re willing to give up in order to put ourselves on the top of the LOVE list. But I’m sure I am no different than you…I AM set in my ways and my habits (good and bad) and therein lies the dilemma…

Working from home most certainly has its advantages, I’m not going to pretend it doesn’t (why else would I LOVE it SO!!!) It allows me the freedom to design my day just the way I like; but it also allows me to slack off when I don’t feel like doing something. I have to be be disciplined enough to MAKE myself do the things that need to be done, like moving, actually “working”, taking a break, eating at a table (not in front of the computer), not calling in sick…you know…those type of things. I mean really…there is NO ONE breathing down my neck if I don’t do what I had every intention of doing in a days time. So discipline is crucial.

But sometimes (OK…a LOT of times) I have been known to NOT even get dressed…YEP…who’s going to see me anyway? I’m soooo comfortable, after all. And why does it matter what I look like when I’m just sitting in my office behind a computer? I have EVEN…(GASP!) gotten up, worked in my pajamas ALL day, taken a shower and put on fresh pajamas to go back to bed in. And who am I kidding…I have even gotten up, not gotten dressed, worked all day and went to bed in the SAME pajamas…and NEVER even thought about taking a shower (DOUBLE GASP!!)


And that is how it all began…my journey…the-stay-at-home-gypsy-that-never-got-dressed!

So after realizing this way of working and living was NOT in alignment with how I want to feel (my CDF’s), I made a decision to make some changes. And the very first thing was to practice what I teach. Put myself (MARIE) on the TOP of my own LOVE list. Being depleted and feeling like crap is not exactly how a coach should be feeling, or want to live. (HELLO!!!) We all need to fill our own tanks if we expect to be able to give anything to anyone! So I decided to walk my walk… and WOW! How things have changed.

But back to the beginning of my story… So I woke up knowing that I wanted to do something everyday where I am physically active; some type of exercise or movement. And I realized that I had gotten so stuck in my ways that until I was willing to give something up or make a shift in my priorities, change would never happen.

And it got me thinking…WHY do we create and accept the HABITS, RULES and LIMITING BELIEFS that “we” (YES, WE HAVE DONE THIS) have put into place? No one is responsible for us and our “rules”, except for “us”. You. Are. Responsible. For. You. And just because we have been taught something doesn’t mean we have to accept it or can’t change our mind.

But I can be stubborn…

I know how CRAZY the conversations I have with myself can be and that something as simple as taking ACTION and the time out of my day to exercise, should not be so difficult; that’s just another excuse!

The whole point is that I/WE are the ones that have put ourselves into this crazy ass position. We make up stupid rules and accept other peoples crappy beliefs and forget to question them or think for ourselves. WHY AM I DOING THIS??? Who cares if I ride my bike with no socks? Who cares if I ride my bike in my jeans? Who cares if I exercise and don’t take a shower right away (well, Joe might, but I do use extra deodorant.)

So now my primary thought is – How do I want to feel? And I promise you, STUCK in a habit that doesn’t serve me- is NOT how I want to feel. That only makes way for more excuses! How I want to feel is FREE- not imprisoned by my own thoughts, habits, beliefs and actions (or lack of). I want to choose for myself what it is that I want to do. I am not a conformist, I never have been (which is why I work for myself). I can exercise when I want to, not when others say I should (i.e. first thing in the morning-NOT FOR ME!)

We get so complacent in our day-to-day lives that we forget to live to our fullest potential. We get stagnant and lazy. I sit in my pajamas with my hair in a ponytail flip, eating at my computer while my waist grows and I feel like crapola! No one was meant to live a life a misery. We are meant to thrive…not survive!

So as I said, I have made the decision to put myself on the TOP of MY love list NOW (not tomorrow), and it is my FULL intention to stay there! And with that comes change; change in the form of new habits and beliefs; letting go of the ones that no longer serve me.  And OMG!!! It feels amazing!! I feel so good and in perfect alignment with my core desired feelings. And I KNOW that I am moving forward, not staying stuck or going in reverse.

Exercise/movement is now in my calendar everyday. No excuses, no rules; I do it at the time of day that feels good to ME, not when or how everyone else (THEE experts) say I should. FREE. TO. BE. ME.
